Maltese Regiments of the British Army

The Maltese Militia, 1801.

Another unit was the Maltese Militia, was raised in 1801 by Major-General Pigot under orders from Sir Ralph Abercrombie. It consisted of three divisions of infantry militia for local defence, each of three companies of 100 men each, which were chosen from amongst those who had earlier served in the blockade against the French.
They were supplied with musket, bayonet and cartridge pouch. They wore a uniform woven from local cotton, a leather shako and a red sash.
