HISTORICAL
SUMMARY Maltese Regiments of the British Army The Maltese Militia, 1852-1857.
An additional step to make up for the lack of troops in Malta and as a measure to ensure the availability of able men, all men between the ages of 16 and 60 were requested to enroll in the new Maltese Militia. The only exemptions were Members of Council of Government, Judges, Magistrates, the Superintendent of Police, doctors and the Clergy. It was divided into six companies while drill sessions were set for 18 days a year. The uniform was blue with red facings and white lace. Due to the harsh living conditions of the time and that the time spent on drill sessions meant loss of income and volunteers' attendance dwindled with time until the until in 1857, the corps ceased to exist.
