Maltese Regiments of the British Army

The Maltese Provincial Battalions, 1802-1815.

Officer, Maltese Provincial Battalion (1802-1815), Drawing by Major A.E. Chesney

In the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, it was stipulated that half of Malta's 4000 strong garrison should consist of Maltese troops under Maltese officers. For this purpose, The Maltese Provincial Battalions succeeded the militia infantry and artillery.

In February 1803, Sir Alexander Ball had stipulated that the two Battalions of Infantry of 700 men each were to be raised. The 1st Battalion under the Marquis Parisi wore a red infantry uniform with sky- blue facings and silver lace while the 2nd Battalion was commanded by Count de Gatto and wore green facings with gold lace.
