The Ghonella, or Faldetta, is a large,
 black silk shawl cum bonnet and was
 part of Maltese women's Sunday best 
outfits and national costume until the 
mid 20th century. Today it is only seen
 at folkloristic events and on postcards

- 1777-1798

The Reggimento Di Malta was raised 
in 1777 as a regular infantry regiment, 
for both defence and internal security.
 Officers of this Regiment were all 
Knights of the Order of St. John. 
It was disbanded in 1798.

The reign of Grand Master la Valette 
 witnessed The Great Siege of 1565. 
The Grand  Master   had   anticipated 
  this
 and the island was fortified and  after 
a long  siege  the  Turkish   Armada  
was  defeated.     La Valette built the
 city of Valletta .

Royal Malta Artillery - 1889-1976
Gunner 1890 in tropical helmet

Originally formed as Royal Malta 
Fencible Regiment and later converted
into an artillery corps. Uniform similar 
to that worn by the Royal Regiment
 of Artillery but with the distinction 
of having the Maltese Cross on its
 appointments.
