HISTORICAL
SUMMARY Maltese Regiments Malta had its own Militia units throughout the Great
Siege of 1565 and during the French Blockade of 1798-1800.
In fact, it was not until 1776,when Grandmaster De Rohan
raised a Maltese regiment of 1055 effective men, that
Malta had its own first regular troops. The next regular
Maltese unit I Cacciatori Maltesi (The Maltese
Light Infantry) was raised in March 1800 by Brigadier-General
Thomas Graham specifically to augment the British-Maltese
field force deployed in action against the French troops
of occupation since 1798.
* "The Royal Malta Fencible Regiment" was later re-designated "The Royal Malta Fencible Artillery"(1861-1889) and "The Royal Malta Artillery" (1889-1976). In 1976 this unit was re-designated "1st Regiment, Armed Forces of Malta" Extracts from The History of the KING'S OWN MALTA REGIMENT by Captain J.M.Wismayer with kind permission of Said Publishers. |
