Following the demise of Grandmaster
Ximenes in 1775, it was felt by the Order that the time was ripe to
raise a regular infantry regiment, both for defence and for internal
security. The Regiment was raised in September 1777 on a regular
basis. Its formation ordered by the Chapter General ,was based on that
of a French regiment of the line.
